One outfit that you want for the family portion is good! Something that is comfy/easy to change in and out of for baby, and easy for you to move in as well! Typically I do poses in your bedroom, living room, and nursery but can leave any of those out if you didn’t want them. Don’t stress about throw pillows or fancy bedding. I can get tighter shots and I usually blur the background. The focus is on your family and the new addition!
I am a natural light photographer so the more sunlight the better. I will open all the blinds and turn off overhead lights and lamps.
A lot of new mamas find it easy to wear a flowy/longer dress. I know tight clothing is sometimes uncomfortable after labor and when someone is uncomfortable it shows on their face. So your comfort is the most important part!! Depending on your home decor, solid/neutral colors are best. Just keep them light and focus on you and your new baby.
We can do an outfit change for baby if you want more than one outfit too! They don’t love being changed a lot and that sometimes leads to them being more fussy, so we will start in the outfit that you like the most. I recommend one outfit and then maybe a blanket or swaddle you like. But we can definitely do more if you wanted and baby is tolerating it!
I know a "schedule" probably isn't in effect yet, but scheduling a time when they have generally been the most sleepy is best. A nice full belly and a clean diaper right before we start will help!
My timeline for these sessions are very fluid! I know I am 100% on their timeline and if we go over because they needed to eat, change, or just needed a mommy cuddle it’s TOTALLY fine. But I usually can get all the shots we need within the 60-90 minutes.
I have had a couple babies that have cried the whole time and I always say “good thing pictures don’t have sound!” Lol. I can angle in a way we don’t their face in every shot but I will also try to get them as most comfortable as possible to avoid that.
If you have more kiddos, don't worry! I have TONS of experience with toddlers at these shoots. I always give them plenty of breaks and let them decompress and not have to be in every shot. It’s a lot of change for them happening at once so I am totally patient and give them plenty of fun mixed in with getting them to pose and smile. These are a lifestyle approach so we are capturing this fun and chaotic phase of life! Lol.
